Ninth Art Press, the people who brought you “Show and Tell: A Collection About Teaching and Learning” and “The Greatest of All Time Comics Anthology”, are looking for proposals and submissions for our next anthology, on the theme of SUBCULTURES.
What are we looking for?
Short comics stories about – or taking place within – subcultures or co-cultures, exploring the personalities, customs, dialects and values found there. The stories can be fictional or non-fictional, satirical or serious, drily academic or richly entertaining (preferred). Stories should not have been included in any other anthologies or collections.
What do we mean by “subcultures?”
A subculture (also referred to more recently as a co-culture: “in order to avoid the connotations of inferiority associated with the ‘sub-‘ prefix,” says Wikipedia) is a subject of study in social science disciplines including anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies. The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as “a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or interests at variance with those of the larger culture”.
So again, what are we looking for?
We are looking for comics that deal with subculture in one (or more) of the following ways:
1) Social science-esqe field studies on a particular group (probably non-fiction)
2) Slice-of-life stories about a particular group (fiction/non-fiction)
3) Autobiographical stories, if you identify with a specific subculture and are willing to share
Stories should be between 1-8 pages, black and white or grayscale. Detailed specs below.
PROPOSALS: DECEMBER 15, 2013. Please write a short description of your story, the subculture involved, and approximate page length.
FINISHED ART: APRIL 15, 2014. (See below for technical specs)
$10 per page. We know, we know, you won’t be rolling in the dough, but we believe that cartoonists should receive checks. (This will NOT confer any rights to the material from creators to us, other than use of the story in this particular anthology).
Please contact us at email@example.com with proposals/submissions and any questions; we look forward to hearing your ideas and seeing your work!
