Covers 1&2 150 small

We will be signing the first TWO issues of “In a Single Bound,” the new anthology of Boston superhero comics — this afternoon at Comicopia in Kenmore Square- 464 Commonwealth Ave, Kenmore – from 3:00 to 6:00.  Meet In a Single Bound contributors Joey Peters, J.L. Bell and Dan Mazur in person!!!

IN A SINGLE BOUND # 3: ALL WOMAN (& WOMAN-IDENTIFIED) CREATORS ISSUE. BOSTON/NEW ENGLAND-BASED SUPERHERO STORIES. DEADLINE AUGUST 1st
women cartoonists reduced

Tarpe Mills, Marie Severin, Jackie Ormes and Ramona Fradon will probably not contribute to In A Single Bound 3. Will you??

The third-issue of the Boston Comics Roundtable/Ninth Art Press’s In a Single Bound (“Superheroes for Greater Boston and Beyond!”) will be an all-women (and women-identified) creators issue.

Otherwise, the criteria for contributors is the same as issues #1 & 2:

SUPERHERO STORIES  (with as broad and flexible  a definition of the genre as possible: tone can be deadly serious, flamboyantly silly, obscurely abstract, or anything in between):

SET IN BOSTON or elsewhere in NEW ENGLAND, with specific local flavor and references and a strong sense of space enthusiastically encouraged.

CHARACTERS  must be original or public domain. (NOTE: Of course, the superheroes can be of any gender!!)

TONE: I personally encourage off-beat, quirky, alternative approaches to the genre.  But that is up to you.

AGE: All-ages friendly.  That said, it doesn’t have to be geared for kids.  But nothing that a reasonable parent wouldn’t want their kids to lay eyes on.

LENGTH: 1-6 pages.

BLACK AND WHITE, GRAY SCALE.  Please contact me if you have any questions regarding format, image mode, etc.

SIZE: Safe image area: 6 x 9.  For full bleeds, art should reach 6.875 ” x 10 .5” (This is for a standard comic book trim size of 6.625 X 10.25)

Submit proposals, please, as soon as possible.  We want to avoid any duplication of idea or setting.   Script submissions are highly recommended,

Does “all women/woman-identified creators” mean NO male creators involved at all, or allow for male-female collaborations? Well: all woman creators would be preferable, but if a woman writer or artist must, or really wants to, work with a male collaborator, we won’t be sticklers.

The primary purpose of the anthology is to showcase the work of BCR members, but non-members are welcome to submit as well. If we get too much work for one issue, we’ll just make more.  The editorial policy is to encourage new creators, and our goal is to let all who want to take part be represented in the anthology (provided they meet the content and format specifications). Which is not a 100% guarantee , or anything…  and expect editorial input!

At this point, unfortunately, it’s not economically feasible to pay contributors, since we want to put all income towards future anthologies.  If we make TOO much money, this will be revisited.

And for those of you who identify as men, keep thinking of Boston superhero stories; we will return to our un-gendered policy with #4 (hopefully with men, women and everyone else taking part)!

In a Single Bound is published by Ninth Art Press, in conjunction with Boston Comics Roundtable (which is not a publishing entity).  Ninth Art Press is solely responsible for whatever publishers are solely responsible for.

The fantasmagorical cover is by Dan Moynihan, and here is our slightly snarky press release:

Ninth Art Press presents

THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME COMICS ANTHOLOGY

Ninth Art Press is justifiably proud to announce the publication of The Greatest of All Times Comics Anthology, a collection of stories revolving around the concepts of supreme excellence, magnificent achievement, and inflated hype.

In short, each of the 20 stories in the collection is about the Greatest something of All Time.

26 independent comics creators put their minds to this challenge, and produced an assortment of stories which run the gamut from political satire to autobiography, fantasy, historical non-fiction and other genres. With subjects like the greatest rock band of all time, the greatest conspiracy of all time and the greatest spy of all time, to the greatest potato of all time, the greatest bruise of all time, and the greatest sweater of all time, the stories range from  the (supposedly) factual, to the entirely fictional, to the extravagantly silly.

“The idea of the theme was, on the one hand, to play with the idea of hype and success which are such big parts of our culture, or to look at the real meaning of greatness, depending on how each individual creator wanted to interpret it,” says co-editor Dan Mazur. “We just put this rich idea in front of a bunch of writers and artists and let them run with it. We ended up with a lot of unexpected things, and a really fun collection of comics. Maybe the greatest ever. No, definitely the greatest ever.”

The stories in The Greatest of All Time Comics Anthology range from tantalizingly economical two pagers, to a ten-page epic about the Greatest Neck Pillow of All Time; there are also two stories in full, vibrant color. Bound in durable card-stock covers, with numerologically-significant total page count of 123, the collection sells for the astonishingly reasonable price of $12.00. There is some mature content**, making the book appropriate for ages 14 and up. Or younger, if the parents are really cool.

The Greatest of All Time Comics Anthology has also been chosen by the editors of the Greatest of All Time Comics Anthology as a “top pick” holiday gift for anyone interested in off-beat independent comics anthologies.

Edited by Dan Mazur and Jesse Lonergan, contributors to the book are:

**PARENTAL ADVISORY: The word “orgasm” appears on pages 5 & 7, and “The Greatest Beer of All Time” contains references to beer.

There’s no reason on earth you should believe it, but this book is really, really close to being done!   We’re not exaggerating when we saythat this anthology will be absolutely the greatest accomplishment in the history of comics!  It will be make its debut, simultaneously, on the weekend of December 15th at the two greatest holiday shopping events in the world: The Holly Fair, in Cambridge, and the Bazaar Bizarre in Boston… and will be available here on the website too, of course.

And in the nature of a teaser, here’s a sketch for the cover by the great Dan Moynihan:

Cold Wind Review update

I’m a little tardy getting these reviews posted (what’s five months between friends?), but here are some more notices for Cold Wind, from

Stumptown Trade Review  ”Cold Wind is everything that a self-contained story should be…”

Rob Clough’s High-Low  ”…a very stylishly designed and told fantasy…”

Comic Book Daily “….one of the most impressive independent releases I’ve read in ages.”

Cold Wind Review

Positive words from the insightful Justin Giampoli at the Thirteen Minutes Blog, who calls Cold Wind “…one of the best small press titles I’ve read this year.”

… and/or buy the book.

This time it’s Emi Gennis’ on her blog: Emi Gennis’ Comics and Illustration. (She liked it.)  (Or else we probably wouldn’t have linked to it.)

“I thoroughly enjoyed reading this collection of horror stories and hope that the Boston Comics Roundtable and their associated publishers continue making them,” is how she concludes her lengthy write-up.

Emi has her own comics there too of course, which are definitely worth a read (she has a dark sense of humor and a taste for real-life mysteries).  And there’s also a very interesting call for submissions for an anthology she’s editing. So go for the review, stay for the blog.

Reviews!!

On Sequential Tart, Roz Young says of HELLBOUND II: “This is an anthology created by people who find truth in horror, and will be enjoyed by anyone who shares a passion for the genre.”  READ THE WHOLE REVIEW!

At Spandexless, meanwhile, David Anderson wrote (of the same book): There’s a lot of talent condensed into this volume, both in terms of writing and art.”  READ MORE!

Oh, and COLD WIND has gotten some attention too!   In an entertaining roundup on the Boston Comic Con from Bleeding Cool, Louis Falcetti calls it “one of the most interesting, fun, gorgeous books I’ve read in a long time.”  A lot of other great local comics are mentioned, so…. READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE!
